Do I need an electricity retail licence?

Any organisation that wishes to sell energy in the National Energy Market (NEM) must apply for and receive an authorisation from the Australian Energy Regulator (AER). In Victoria the process is slightly different, whereby a licence is granted by the Essential Services Commission (ESC).

Whilst not yet compulsory, many Embedded Network Owners are electing to become energy retailers given both the increasing obligations imposed on embedded networks by the AEMC, and the impact of hte Power of Choice reforms. These reforms make it much easier for embedded network customers to source their own on-market retailer, which can significantly

reduce the financial return of the site for the owner of the network. Possesssing significant experience in the Embedded Network Space, Sonne Energy Australia can assist in helping Embedded Network Owners to themselves become an electricity retailer, and avoid the risks of any sudden changes in the regulatory landscape.

Securing a licence allows your organisation to significantly diversify your business and find new revenue streams – including selling electricity to your organisation’s existing group of cutomers, bundling energy products and facilitating corporate PPA’s.
